I haven't seen Ubuntu preinstalled, but lots of Turion 2 white (no OS, maybe barebones) notebooks are available. Personally, I think AMD is falling severely behing Intel in the notebook department. Go for a Memron solution or a even a Conroe solution if battery life isn't as important as saving a few bucks. You are probably out of luck though if you don't add another half pound or so to your requirments. Most manufacturers consider ultralight as much a premium as top specs and are reluctant to go through whitebox distributors.

I love AMD but have to agree with the poster above. Eventually AMD will get their with their notebook processors.

nope :( the turion x2's are beaten off by even the core duo 1's, forget conroe or memrom.

So which is the best Intel processor I should be looking for in an ultralight notebook?

Merom, but they aren't available yet. Soon.

You can wait or just get a core due now.

I can wait until August, first week.

It should surface somewhere around August, or so the rumors say (I believe Intel says third quarter).
Note that the first conroe's are due on 27 July, so it might be safe to assume that Merom is not far behind. But do not forget "***-u-me" ;)

Is that taking a 64 bit OS into consideration? I knew the Duos were faster for 32 bit stuff, which is what matters to most people, but I figured it would be the other way around for 64 bit.

Not that it matters, as I have a Turion X2 that I'm very happy with and it was much cheaper than a similar Core Duo laptop. Just curious. :)

You have a valid point with the 64bit issue. Suppose it depends on whether you want to go the 64bit route or not.
