Theme: Gilouche
Wallpaper: Deep Sea Hunting
Icons: Industrial (Suse 10.1 version)
Gaim: Tango gaim @ deviantart.com

Switched to compiz for the cool eye candy. I keep switching back and forth between metacity and compiz because Gilouche has an awesome metacity theme and video playback on Xgl bites the bullet.

Oh I'd like to tell everyone to check out favoor.com for a cool ajax startpage experience.

Ah, just wondering. I saw that you were using the "Glide64" graphics plugin in Mupen64, and assumed that was something to do with the voodoo series of cards since they used the Glide graphics API or something.

Here we go, my first desktop post. Compiz on Xgl and ATI 9700 pro.

I'm still fiddling with settings on a daily basis to make things nicer. Most recently I removed shadows, which hugely improves the panels' appearance at the cost of a slight degradation in windows' appearance. Wobbly makes up for that though.

My ongoing concern is the debate of top and bottom panels versus a Windows style bottom panel only. Being Different™ versus screen real estate.

The DRAWER is something you can add to the Gnome panel. It is what is resting on the left side of my screen. It rolls in and out and you can put all of your shortcuts or links in it.

Well, I'm not sure if this thread is just supposed to be about wallpapers or what, but I just changed some settings in XFCE and I am very pleased with the results. It really suits me, and it's much better than the Xubuntu default IMHO.

I like things to look plain and simple, maybe it is considered minimalist. And I like to make the most out of my "screen real-estate", so the small window titles are nice to me.

switched window manager style to "smallscreen"
switched user interface theme to "outdoors"
switched icon theme to "tangerine"

still got the default xfce background

I'm not sure that it does. This menu was transparent because the menu was too busy slowly fading out to have got out of the way quickly enough for the screenshot!

However I have just experimented and found out that you can get transparent menus by adjusting the "state" plugin. Screenshot below shows the two settings in the "state" plugin I have entered to enable a transparent gnome panel menu and transparent context menus. I couldn't manage to get the transparent menus present for the screenshot, sorry!

It does, just the way you are doing it ;) Btw, just setting 'unknown' windows to transparent worked for all my menus, and I think I used app name 'Gnome-panel' to make my panel transparent too..

And you can get screenshots with menus open if you take them with Gimp and set some delay before the shot is taken..

Rezlooks-Mockup (http://gnomethemes.org/pre/Rezlooks-Mockup.jpg)
Candido-Mockup (http://gnomethemes.org/pre/Candido-Mockup.jpg)

These are themes, not mockups. This color scheme is based on an old clearlooks cairo 'Mockup' that I can't seem to find the link to anymore. I've made a clearlooks and gflat version but they do not look good because of the bright highlights found in these cairo engines, especially in the button widgets. Rezlooks and Candido only seem to have this problem with vline, hline, and frames. I have not packaged them yet but I will.

The icons are graphite-dark (color mod of graphite). Not packaged, but I've thought about it.

Not much changes here.. I'm thinking about making a new GTK theme, but I haven't had too much extra time lately.. And I should finnish this current theme some day too

Anyway, Compiz just got more configurations for window borders! \\:D/

Edit: I just found out that there's also a theme editor for Compiz.. I tweaked my window borders a bit more and attached another screenshot with the gcompizthemer.

I use silicon window border, silicon controls and human icons.

For firefox I use the human theme from the "firefox-themes-ubuntu" package (available from main).

Here's the wallpaper I use :

Well, I have no idea how to install those icons. Is there any guide or can anyone explain? Because I cant do it using the control center. =(You will have to do what the Gentoo guys do...save the icons to a folder in your /home/username directory and then either learn how to make an icon theme for Gnome using them or manually install each one, perhaps using Alacarte Menu Editor for your Gnome menus anyway...it's a time consuming process, but you will learn a lot--kind of like the Gentoo distribution. :)

Look at all the gray mac themes, and if you feel like swimming, all the windows themes. Gray is easy on the eyes, easy to contrast, and easy to blend with more color variants. It's the easiest, most versitile, base color to work with especially when working with a limited, or hard to theme and try to make all free software apps happy, api like gtk.

10% of all men on Earth are colour blind, but very few people understand that being colour blind does not mean you only see in monochrome.
I can see colours pretty well, but blue and purple, red and some browns and greens, yellow and some greens and oranges and some lighter colours such as cyan are hard for my eyes to see correctly.
This can be a pain when you're designing web sites, but it's not the end of the world :/

Also, Sea bird in unedited DSLR photo from wikimedia commons... Most likely location = near the sea, meaning the most likely colours are blue, white and shades of grey.

I was just kidding with you, but I can relate. I have the exact same problem with many of the same colors you mentioned. And it really gets on my nerves how many people will swear that I'm not color blind, that I just never learned my colors. ](*,)

My point was that its a theme thing, and has nothing to do with any os, so it does matter, in fact it's a design thing and universal.

it is kxdocker (http://www.xiaprojects.com/www/prodotti/kxdocker/main.php) which is in repos (but an old version), a recent version is available here (http://asher256-repository.tuxfamily.org/) for dapper.
kxdocker is qt/kde linked since it's a kde app but works nice on gnome.
edit: i didn't enjoy these builds, so i compile it myself.
A similar project exists for gnome : cairo-docker (http://macslow.thepimp.net/?p=61) bu it's in early stages and not yet usable i guess.

I just took a look at the CSS in firefox's web developer extension. It's nice since it lets you edit it and see the results in realtime without needing access to the server.

By default there is a 1px border on the bottom of all links. But when you hover over one,
the border is taken away. The size of the element becomes smaller, and you are suddenly no longer hovering over it, so it displays the border again and the cycle repeats. It looks like the fix for this would simply be to replace the border with 1px padding. It works in my browser (Firefox 1.5.0.4).

From the css:
.ubuntu_messagebody a:hover {
color: #800000;
border-bottom-style: none;
padding-bottom:1px; /*this line is added by me*/
}

Edit:
Added this message to Forum Upgrade Bugs & Glitches (http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=211210)

this makes more sense...lol, What was that all about ...strange desktop

Well, so far this month there's three desktop layouts I'm really liking and can't decide on.

1. Wallpaper: Suse Wallpaper
Theme: Rezlooks Graphite
Misc: SLAB (the SLED menu/application browser/control center)

I really like this one but although more professional looking it's not different enough...
http://img301.imageshack.us/img301/953/Screenshot-46-thumb.png (http://img301.imageshack.us/img301/2258/Screenshot-46.png)

2. Wallpaper: "Ski and enjoy the scenery" (from Gnome-Look.org)
Theme: Rezlooks Gilouche
Misc: Hmmm, what should I put here. Well there's the latest banshee from cvs and I have to say, it really doesn't have any competition once you install all the plugins (not to mention it looks great). And no, the cvs isn't unstable, it's rock-solid.
http://img301.imageshack.us/img301/8318/Screenshot-51-thumb.png (http://img301.imageshack.us/img301/9383/Screenshot-51.png)

3. Wallpaper: "Waiting for the sun to rise" (from Gnome-Look.org as well)
Theme: Rezlooks Gilouche
Misc: btw the icons are SUSE's "Industrial" icon theme.

thanks in advance!

I've tried using various docks, but i just can't beat the panels for functionality.
KXDocker was most impressive in terms of features, but it was so uinintuitive it hurt. Which is a shame.

@ Horizon, that application browser looks cool. What is it? Are there any KDE alternatives that people know of?

In regards to fonts...it's really more of a luck thing. You just have to find the right combination.

Hmm I've done a lot of random stuff to my fonts but I think I have an idea of how I got them like they are now. Firstly I tweaked them with the /etc/fonts/local.conf from this post:
http://www.ubuntuforums.org/showpost.php?p=1186480&postcount=1
because asian fonts were looking ugly in dapper. After the local.conf I went to fonts in the preferences menu and changed the fonts and the size to this:
http://img146.imageshack.us/img146/2843/screenshot536wj.png
because Japanese font makes latin characters look really ugly and I needed both latin and asian fonts to look good.

You mean music collection? Yeah, I'm prety sure I have all of her albums and singles. I dunno, I might have missed one or two of her recent singles though. I donwloaded a discography from the jpopsuki tracker a while back and a few of her singles since. I'm not that crazy about her music, although she's had some really good songs and I find her really likable as a person.

Back on Ubuntu after about 2 months of being back on windows. I bought WoW, so I decided to just stick with windows, but then I heard how good WoW is supposed to run with wine, so I wiped windows again. After some problems I finally got it running as good as I did in windows. :D (Well, for the most part. The framerate is a bit worse, but nothing too bad.) Feels good to be back on Ubuntu, I missed it.

About the transparent/borderless terminal..I'm using gnome terminal with Alltray and a startup script. With most terminals you can look in the preferences for removal of borders and menulists..and with the right commandline in the startup script you can get it to start where ever you want on the desktop. Alltray is just for docking it in the systemtray.

Compiz is getting nice theme support, in some ways even better than Metacity has as Compiz also has easy GUI tool to adjust themes ;) And now we have custom bitmaps for window buttons too..

My latest. This isn't metacity, it's COMPIZ with my Gilouche inspired theme. It's WIP, but I'll post a link once I finish ironing the bugs out of the pixmaps file.

Gilouche compiz theme (http://www.compiz.net/viewtopic.php?pid=13775#p13775). You need gcompizthemer and quinn's compiz. More info in that link.

Nice screen space...kind of makes me want to stop buying widescreens and buy a 4:3 :-k

Would you mind sharing where to get that gaim icon mod and that wallpaper? I keep seeing screenshots with those gaim icons but I haven't been able to find it...

Here you go!

Deep Sea Hunting (http://themes.belchfire.net/gallery_uploads/1140724337/gallery_2_2_19922.jpg)

The wallpaper is huge it's 2560x1600. I scaled it to 1920x1200 (1600x1200 monitor) and centered it which crops out the logo.

Here's a picture of my desktop. As always, minimal, semi-transparant and nice colors to look at for hours :)

Am I the only one here that doesn't like all the eye candy that is Xgl/compiz? Wobbly windows are annoying because you have to wait for them to stop wobbling before you can use them. The fade effect, menus aren't instantly visible. Full window transparency.. I honestly haven't discovered a use for this. Why do I want to view firefox 50% transparent and see my desktop underneath.

Cool features: 3d desktop, scaler (expose clone), realtime alt+tab and the quinn plugin that scales the window down to the mouse when closed, and expands a created window to it's location. Those increase usability, the others seem to slow responsiveness...

Heh, am I the only that gets a headache from compiz. I had to turn off the wobbly windows, because they were making me seasick. Same thing with the rotating cube. I wish it could just have regular desktops, but it cannot if you turn off the cube. I finally had to disable the whole thing. Maybe I don't play enough FPS games to inure myself to that kind of environment.
