I'm trying to install Ubuntu on a PC that already has Windows 7 on it (not on a Mac). The idea is to switch entirely to Linux, but first to convince my family ;) I want to show them how Ubuntu works.
Do you suggest that I shrink the Wndows partition, leaving unformatted space for the Ubuntu installation, and then try to install it?

Yes. Do this in Windows using it's software though. Important! DON'T use Gparted (unless you're talking about XP).
