when i try and install Lubuntu 12.4 from the live disk after booting up the screen freezes at the welcome screen and the disc spins forever. Left running for about 6 hrs with no changes and the mouse is frozen.

So I downloaded the alternative disc, but it freezes on the first screen to choose the language.

System is an old HP with a Celeron 500 and 198 of memory, trying to set up for the kids. 98 second edition came standard and worked fairly well for windows 98 but the disk was used as a kids Frisbee years ago.

Slacko Puppy installed fine however its a little slow, no other distro has been able to install without encountering a problem.

barelyhere; Hi ! Welcome to the forum .

Try this method to boot.
As soon as the bios screen clears, press any key -I use shift- should get the boot options menu;
choose f6 (for nomodeset)
f10 to continue to boot.

Can you now boot into the operating system ?
