I use SolidWorks with a plugin called CamWorks at work to design medical instruments, machining fixtures, and make programs for cnc machines. As far as I know this software is only available for Windows.

I would like to use something similar at home on my ubuntu computer for design and cnc programming.

I have used several 2D cad programs like Autocad etc, then the company I work for made us all switch to SolidWorks about 5 years ago. We didn't like it at the time, but now I would never go back. I still occasionally use those programs for legacy stuff and now see how clunky they are in comparison. These old style cad programs are all I have seen available for linux.

I want something like SolidWorks and I want it on ubuntu.
I'm also looking for a car with 400 hp and 40 mpg, so I suspect I may be waiting awhile for both. Still, if anyone knows about the availability of either one of these there are many people like me who are interested.

I have a Fadal 4020 milling machine at home and it would be really convenient to be able to design and program stuff there. I sometimes make fixtures and tooling for work as well as various projects for myself.

I am into 3d modeling, something close to cad. While I dont know a lot, maybe this link can help. (http://www.tech-edv.co.at/lunix/CADlinks.html)

I keep a list of CAD programs here (http://linuxappfinder.com/graphics/cad). If anyone knows of any good ones that are not listed, please let me know.

Hi Gary,

I have also been looking for a solid modeling program for Ubuntu. I found a program called "Openscad" that is supposed to work with linux. I downloaded the packages but can't figure out how to install the software. I'm sure this is a case of user error as I'm very new to ubuntu. If you (or anyone) has any luck making this work, please let me know.

Here's the website:

Good luck.

I've been playing with it lately. It seems very good. Kinda like pro-e. There is only a 32 bit version for Ubuntu right now.

GraphiteOne seems like it could be exactly what I was looking for. I can't wait to give it a try! Oh, there is a 64 bit version out now.
