Red Hat was lately going after the CentOS website (http://www.centos.org/modules/news/article.php?storyid=66) and that worries and annoys me. I don't care for Fedora Core nor RHEL anyway, but it's the principal of the thing. I can't help but wonder if they are going to go after all of the RHEL clones. So I had an idea to parody the situation, and to avoid promoting the name of Red Hat by not having to mention it.

In Harry Potter, Voldemort is "He who shall not be named" or "You Know Who." Prince was "The Artist Formerly Known as Prince" for awhile. Could we come up with a codename for Red Hat that people "in the know" would understand, but that would not promote the name of Red Hat? Green Shoe (http://cgi-now.de/linux/greenshoe.html) is already taken for a German linux distro. It might be convenient to have the same first initials, like "Rat Head" so that you could refer to "Rat head Package Manager" for example, but Red Hat might argue that was too obvious.

This episode also reminds me of my days hanging out on SITO (http://www.sito.org) which was originally Operative Term Is Stimulate (OTIS) until the Otis College of Art and Design (http://www.otis.edu/fileadmin/homepage/index.html) bullied them with the threat of a lawsuit.

Well, it'd still be based on RedHat.

They were going after CentOS because they were using RedHat trademarks. They can say "red had package manager" without getting in trouble. They just can't use any of their logos, etc.

basically, no, it really doens't matter.

In Harry Potter fashion, CentOS is calling RedHat "Prominent North American Enterprise Linux Vendor". :)

sadly, you can't use that as it still embodies their "Red Hat" trademark...

My opinion is just ignore Red hat... when anybody mentions them, just go Red hat who??? and then when you get the answer... just say... "oh, them... didn't they come up with that antiquated package manager?"

*sigh* this is what I was afraid would happen.

Dead Rat has been going for a long time, along with M$, Windblows, etc etc etc.

I imagine that this kind of lack of respect for other products, regardless of whether you like them, is one reason some people leave the Linux community.

Say you were trying out another distro and there were some people on thier forum calling Ubuntu, "Screwbuntu." Don't you think that might make you want to question whether you should stay?

Some people absolutely love RedHat, some people don't. Sharing opinions about it is one thing, but calling it childish names is another.

Enough with the RedHat bashing people, it's getting SO old - but then again you people don't know where your beloved GNOME desktop comes from, nor your compiler or your libc.. or the kernel for that matter.

RedHat employs a big pack of developers, and they give back a lot of code.

I was previously going to let this go, hoping that the immense lack of respect for other developers' work might subside, but this thread has the potential to get way out of hand.

Nipping it in the bud.

Please note, your criticisms of other distributions are ALWAYS welcome. Just be sure its criticism (based on some real experience) and not bashing.
