Hi,

Here's my new blog : http://ubuntudemon.wordpress.com/

What do you guys think ?

One thing I don't like about wordpress is that in order to create something decent I have to edit the html sometimes. I'd rather do it wiki style (which is less cumbersome)

My blog is added to planet.ubuntu.com

You can digg my blog here : http://digg.com/linux_unix/A_blog_by_a_moderator_at_www.ubuntuforums.org

Looks good.

I personally did not like wordpress because it was not really scaleable, and like you said sometimes you have to edit html.

My site is runnig off e107 (e107.org).

You might wanna give it a try, I find it much easier to use and more scaleable if you decide to grow beyond a blog.

Looks nice. I think there's an error, though, in the quotation part. the quote tags are visible.

Is it possible to make a blog using a wiki? Never knew that. I'm also trying to make my own blog slash website. But I'm still in the process of studying/refreshing my knowledge on HTML and CSS.

The only reason I like Wordpress is that it's open source. Other than that, it kind of lags behind in the customization department, at least for Wordpress.com. I mean, you're not free to edit your style sheets, right? The only way around that would be to use Wordpress.org instead of the .com. But then you would need to be knowledgeable about PHP and MySQL stuff...

Hey ubuntu_demon, you got a special mention in the Newsforge article, huh. Looks like you were the only one from Ubuntuforums who was able to make it. :D

I know. It's a solution for now.

I don't know whether there exists something like wordpress which uses a wiki markup language. I would like to find out though. I'm new to blogging :)

That may be, but overall I usually like the look of Wordpress blogs better than most others.

I enjoyed reading yours and look forward to having a little inside insight.

Thank you for the quick answer.

requirements for my blog :
-opensource would nice
-wiki-like language (my biggest problem with wordpress)
-don't want to host it myself
-has to look nice
-posting a blog entry has to be as little of an effort as possible.
-I want to be able to post directly from the digg. Digg supports : Typepad,Wordpress,Live Journal,Blogger, Moveable Type, manual (Blogger,Metaweblog API's)

These two alone severely limits your choice to Wordpress and LiveJournal. I have no personal experience with LiveJournal so I can't say anything about it. All that I know is that it is most famous for being very community-oriented.

My own requirements were:
1. open-source
2. free hosting
3. relatively easy to use
4. very customizable

Wordpress(.com) fails on #4, while Wordpress(.org) fails on #2 and a bit of #3
Blogger fails #1
LiveJournal, last I saw, fails #3.
Blogdrive fails #1 and #3
Friendster fails #1 and #3, and a bit of #4
Multiply.com fails #1

I've quite given up hope of finding the blogging service most suitable for me and still be open source. I've decided to be practical and go for the one that answers my needs most, which happens to be Multiply.com (for now).

Sorry for hijacking your thread... :D

Thanks for the tip. Keep them coming :)

I won't blog about this one because personally I prefer distributions to be non-religious (and non-political except for FOSS). So I won't blog about christian edtion, muslim edition, budhist edition, jewish edition or some similar "edition".

But I agree with this quote from mdz
https://lists.ubuntu.com/archives/ubuntu-devel/2006-August/019791.html :

One of the core values of Ubuntu is that it is
available to everyone, without restriction on how they use it. That is an
important part of the freedom provided by "free software".

Religious organizations, governments, charities and stamp collecting clubs
are all welcome and encouraged to adopt Ubuntu and to customize it to meet
their needs, regardless of whether they share an ideology with other Ubuntu
users. This is what it's all about.

Hey, new blog layout. :D

Do you like it ? The content "frame" of the previous one was to small.

I like the new layout. But the colors are a tad too gray for my taste. Is there no option in that theme to change to a more Ubuntu-like color? I don't really like brown myself, but it's more Ubuntu-ish. :D

Nice layout. It's quite neutral. No Ubuntu brown, no wordpress blue :)

With this theme I can't change anything at all (except for the sidebar) :(

I just discovered it's possible to edit the CSS if I spend 15 dollars. But at this time I'm not willing to do that. (wordpress doesn't use a wiki-like language which I prefer)

Luckily it looks quite alright.

Great job, though. Now you'll find an even wider audience. :D

Thanks for trying to help me to solve this (minor) problem.

Unfortunately these plugins are for wordpress.org and not for wordpress.com which would mean that I would have to host my blog myself (or somewhere else).

IMHO it shouldn't look like that. Are you using non-default font settings ?

I suppose other wordpress.com blogs with the same theme give you the same problem.
