I tend to like using Gnome Shell over Unity, though I do like them both. I saw a suggestion to install the gnome-desktop-environment package for those that like to use Gnome. I am wondering what the package actually does verses what is already installed in Ubunutu. I haven't been able to find any information on the specifics of the package and would like to know to see if I actually want it installed or not.

You can have both desktops loaded to Ubuntu and choose which one to run at login.
You can see packages that both use here
Unity (http://packages.ubuntu.com/precise/ubuntu-desktop)
Gnome (http://packages.ubuntu.com/precise/gnome)

Thank you! I guess that is ultimately what I wanted to know, if I could install both without messing with the other.

I installed the gnome shell and still do not see any choices next to my login name. What can I do?
