This is driving me crazy...
In file selection dialogs (e.g., what comes up if you do File->Open in firefox, emacs, or whatever) there is no textbox in which I can just type a path to a file!
I don't know if this is a bug or by design or what.
How do I get the textbox ?
This is Xubuntu 12.04.
Thanks!

You press Ctrl+L (that gives you a location field).

Thanks very much!
Do you know if there's a way to make it come up by default?
When I bring up the file selector dialog, by default the "recently used" item is selected. (I wish I could eliminate this completely, but that's another story.)
Ctrl+L seems not to work while recently used is selected. So, first I have to click on an actual folder with the mouse (leaving the keyboard) and then hit Ctrl+L to bring up the textbox.
Thanks again!

You don't have a 'Open Location' choice right above 'Open File'? Mine is FF 15.0.1
