I'm running Ubuntu 10.04.4 on my home server and will be doing a release upgrade in the not-too-distant. The existing system is on an older IDE drive (/home is on a separate SATA drive) and I'd like to do the "upgrade" onto a newer drive, leaving the older one available as an emergency fallback in case the upgrade doesn't go smoothly.

My questions:
1. Is this a sensible approach or just a lot of overkill?
2. Better to do a fresh install on the new drive and "migrate" settings and apps from the old one?
3. Other approaches?

TYIA,
Dave
