which format to install from usb

I have ubuntu 12.04 as the only operating system on my laptop. I installed it from the disc I got with Ubuntu Made Simple but it is pretty hopeless, for example half the apps won't open from the launcher so I have downloaded ubuntu 12.04 from the ubuntru site. I want to send it to a usb flash drive and then shutdown and install from that. Should I format the flash drive as Ext4 or FAT?

You should get faster speed out of the EXT4.

Formatting not necessary. During the install you will be given the option to use the entire disk.
