I'm having trouble locating information about this. I have vmware ESX with a Ubuntu 12.x desktop running bind9. It works but I feel it's way too much for the one job it has to do, DNS.

So I'm looking for some insight. Is there a mini-Ubuntu or maybe directions to strip Ubuntu down to the minimum required?

Why not just run dd-wrt or something like that on a router? That is what I do.

If you really want to do it on a PC, you need something that has low-power consumption and no moving parts (no hard disk). I was thinking of a similar project a few months ago, but it is really cheaper to just use a consumer router. They are made for 100% uptime and minimal maintenance.
