libre office templates not working

so i've created a template in libre office, and i've created several documents based on that template.
my understanding is that if i change some aspect of formatting on the template, the change should be reflected in the documents that are based on it, right?

but if i change the template (say font color, or font style) and then open one of the documents, i get a dialog box asking if I want to update styles, and i click yes and then the document opens without any changes!

what am i missing??

may you have not save your templates as template files.

I'd be interested in some help with this too. The file format I want to save as a template won't save.
