I've just followed the instructions on the ubuntu website to download and burn ubuntu onto disc. I ticked 'Verify burned data' box but when it was finished it said the data could not be verified. Is this a problem?

That does sound a bit fishy. Here's the md5, assuming you downloaded the 32bit ubuntu desktop:
d791352694374f1c478779f7f4447a3f
ubuntu-12.04-desktop-i386.iso
If not, look here:
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/UbuntuHashes
If it was me, I would use the "try ubuntu before installing" option and if it seems ok, I just go for the install.
Also your probably installing next to windows so have a windows recovery disk handy, incase things go south :)
