Adobe Shockwave is flaky in a Windows but it does work most of the time.

Can't get it to work on Ubuntu.

I'm installing Ubuntu for a friend who has no Windows disk or windows license available.
I think he will want Shockwave..

I've tried this: http://askubuntu.com/questions/48140/compatible-version-of-adobe-shockwave-player

"mozplugger ...... along with wine and windows version of firefox"

It will not work even in the Wine version of Firefox (10) ,, so I did not get as far as "configure mozplugger"

Without online Shockwave games I don't think this will fly ....

Shockwave is not going to work under Linux. My kids play online games all of the time and all they really need is Flash Player and Java. We use the icedtea plugin and have never had any problems. Your friend will just have to learn like my kids did that Linux is not Windows and you just have to find games you enjoy that you can play in Linux.

You are doing your friend a big favor, show him what is available in the Software Center and let him know that popular games are going to be available in the very near future.

Im not sure what exactly you need shockwave for.
I was using gnash for playing .swf files, but have found that for the most part, vlc does an even better job. Firefox plug-ins too. I've never had a swf I couldn't play in Linux. I've tried the swfdec player, I wouldn't bother with it.

if you have a specific swf that gives you problems, I'd like to see it. Post a link.

Shockwave plugin is not used for .swf ("shockwave flash") files. It's for .dcr content made with Director.

(yes, Macromedia's idea of adding the "shockwave" prefix to all their product names after Director/Shockwave became popular was pretty stupid thing to do... And now that we are stuck with the prefix in Flash content there's nothing Adobe can do to remove it...)

There is no Shockwave plugin for Linux, and there never will be. Based on people's reports you might have some luck with windows plugin & windows browser running in Wine/Crossover, but I'd really just recommend forgetting about Shockwave, or alternatively sticking with Windows. Even if you get it workign it's not going to be a nice and smooth experience.

Here's an example of a Shockwave based game: http://www.shockwave.com/gamelanding/burnin-rubber-4.jsp (superior quality even to many downloaded games)

However, I was testing Shockwave on this page: https://www.adobe.com/shockwave/welcome/

Anyway my friend will be using Ubuntu for a while. As mentioned above there are plenty of games that will run on Ubuntu: Adobe Flash games in the browser and also the various stand alone games available for download in the Ubuntu Software centre.

Thanks to all for the comments.

In addition to those, Unity3D is adding Linux support in next release, and it also has a browser plugin which allows games far superior to what Shockwave is capable of. I'd assume they will port the browser plugin to Linux as well since they are already doing the hard work making standalone game support... (and if the developers want, the games can be published for Google Chrome, which is already capable of running them on Linux without needing any extra plugins).

Not just a gaming issue... because I've found that v12.1 will not play .swf embedded video files like those found on CNN dot com.

Other videos (MPEG4 and youtube for example) play just fine. AGP v3800 video card (32mb)

No solution to be found here in the forum as of yet, despite hours (nay - DAYS of searching and reading) VERY frustrating.

11.4 on my laptop has no problems like this.
