Hi all,

Though I've been using Ubuntu for quite sometime, I don't know how to describe my problem precisely. I just upgraded my Ubuntu from 11.04 to 11.10. (I upgraded from 11.10 to 12.04 afterwards, but the problem exists.) After the upgrade, I notice that the whole "theme" or the "looks" of those windows are totally screwed. Please refer to the follow screen shot to see the problem.

Those buttons look so crude and not slick at all. The appearance of "Home Folder" (upper right window in the desktop) is totally a mess. I can tell the whole system is still working properly. But such user interface is quite unusable.

What can cause such problem during the upgrade? (I remember that during the upgrading, I was asked to choose whether to "keep" or "replace" some configuration files. And I chose "replace".) Any way to fix it besides reinstalling the whole system? Thanks a lot.

Hi!, alexren,

Your screen shot looks to me as though you have got a 'high contrast' Theme, especially the Home folder Window with black on black text except when high-lighted.

Open System Settings>Appearance, at the bottom is 'Theme' and a script box, click on the down arrowhead and you will get a choice of themes, though very limited.

A better way is with Ubuntu Tweak, setting the 'GTK' & 'Windows' theme from the drop-down menu for each. http://ubuntu-tweak.com/downloads/

You can download extra GTK3 Themes from various sources, such as gnome.org. I find the 'clearwaita' theme quite a good solution, aka 'clearlooks-phenix'.

Chao!, bogan.

When I change to some other theme (not High Contrast), the problem's gone. Thank you so much.
