I am running Ubuntu 12.04 with gnome 3 desktop. I have several apps in my /opt folder. I cannot add them to the dash with dragging and dropping or my running them and then right clicking them in the dash and adding to favorites. Doesn't give me the option to. A little help on this one would be appreciated. Thanks.

There's an app for adding/removing programs from the Dash in Gnome shell- it's usually under "System Tools" and it's called "Main Menu". The actually app name is alacarte. If it's not installed you can install it, and add/remove programs from the dash with it.

Sorry, figured it out with Alacarte. Didn't even realize I had it. Nice and easy app. Thanks cortman

No problem, glad it's working.
