Hi davidlinn.
While in a terminal, go to:
Edit -> Profile Preferences
In the new window go to the color tab.
Let us know how it goes.

Just to point out that the above is not code to be copied and pasted into Terminal. It is an option in Terminal's menu.

How can I get the terminal menu? I have menu bar showing but no menu with edit available. (Ubuntu 12.04)

Hi Cyber72.
The menu is hidden by default. When shown, it appears on the top bar/panel.
To make it appear press and hold the Alt key, or if you want to go directly to the 'Edit' menu, press Alt+F
Let us know how it goes.
Regards.

Got there thanks - I had to maximize terminal before the menu would appear.
