I have been trying out Mate desktop on Ubuntu 12.04 on a couple computers. I have tried a couple different install instructions, but it has bugs. Often a display daemond dies and then menus look very ugly. I rather use a install that has Mate desktop integrated as default desktop and the major bugs have been worked out. Is there a Ubuntu distro that has just a basic Mate Desktop. I found Descent OS, but they tweek the hell of Mate and make it compleatly different. Anything else?

You might try Linux Mint:

I think I tried Mint Mate a few months ago, but disliked the Mint Menu. I figured out that I can just remove it and add a Mate Main menu. Thanks!

why not using gnome fallback?.
It is the more similar to gnome 2 I know, with the advantages of ubuntu 12.04.
