I ask because I just heard about the inbetweeners and have been watching on netflix and it's really funny. Besides the office and monty python what are some other cool british comedies i should check out?

For BRITISH comedy, my faves are...

Only Fools And Horses -- London wheeler-dealer traders.
Father Ted -- Brilliant!
Blackadder -- Set in different periods of history.
Dad's Army -- Classic WWII Home Guard comedy.
Steptoe And Son -- Rag and bone men.
Porridge -- Prison comedy.
Red Dwarf -- SciFi, with one scruff, one cat, one dead hologram and one robot.
The League Of Gentlemen -- the "We didn't burn him!" is a true classic line!
The Fast Show -- Sketch show.
Not The Nine O'Clock News -- sketch with Gerald the Gorilla is another classic.

Plenty there to Youtube and get a taste.

Another vote for Red Dwarf (also on Netflix, in the UK, at least). I'll also add Fawlty Towers to the table.

All those already mentioned! The Young Ones is great for some early 80s anarchy. Any of the Alan Partridge series are cracking too. Oh, and while I think, you might want to try Brass Eye, especially the paedophile special! Because I'm talking nonce sense.... ;-)

Blackadder -- Set in different periods of history.

SKip the first season, it's good in its way, but Blackadder II and onwards are much funnier & different in tone.

Another one to check out is Peep Show, which is a very good sitcom that also uses a first-person camera to great effect. It star David Mitchell and Robert Webb, and their sketch show That Mitchell and Webb Look is also generally very funny. Father Ted is a must-watch, imho; some of the older comedies haven't aged well, but Red Dwarf is still pretty good (I'm not sure how much of that is nostalgia).

Another series worth watching is Rab C Nesbitt, As long as you can understand the Glaswegian accent. The Rab C series sprung from some sketches on a series called Naked Video (used to be on BBC2 in the late 80's)

It's one of those shows that are character driven.

One episode, in isolation, is difficult to follow but when you understand the characters, it is rewarding.

Ah man! Everyone else has mentions some right classics. Definitely echoing spaced especially if you like Simon Pegg and Nick Frost (From Shaun of the Dead, Hot Fuzz and Paul films).

There has been a few funny comedies in recent years, not sure if it's what you are looking for but I've enjoyed:

Friday night dinner (Because I swear someone has been spying on my family!!)

Bad Education (Don't think the first series has ended yet but I found it very funny since it reminds me of one of my classes from high school).

Just back on BBC2 for it's fourth and final series - The Thick of It.

Political satire at it's sharpest with some of the greatest swearing every broadcast.

Malcolm Tucker will be listed alongside Del Boy and Blackadder as a legend of British comedy.

The writer of The Thick of It, Armando Iannucci, has also recently done a 'US version' called Veep, set in the Vice Presidents office. Damn good too.

They're showing 'Mrs Browns Boys' on TV here in New Zealand at the moment, and i'm really enjoying it. It doesn't take itself too seriously, and is very funny.

Blackadder is also a classic. He was too much of a snivelling wimp in the first season, but as mentioned elsewhere, from 2 onwards, it's fantastic. Shame they never made the 5th series - apparently based on a heavy metal band called Blackadder, with Baldrik drumming, as a bald drummer named Bald Rik. Could have been awesome.

Variety show featuring Ronnie Barker and Ronnie Corbet, two very talented and well-known comedians in their own right. I especially love each of their monologues, and their "news" sections at the start and finish are hilarious.

The Vicar of Dibley
A modern female vicar joins a small community full of lovable oddballs. Very, very funny. They didn't make many episodes of this so it's good to check out over the course of a weekend.

Man About The House
Made in the 1970s, during a time when the show's premise of a man sharing a house with two women was just starting to become accepted. Also very funny.

George and Mildred
MATH spinoff - only got good in the second series IMHO. The two title characters have a real comic chemistry.

Men Behaving Badly
Iconic show of the 1990s. I know people who still quote this show, even today.

Are You Being Served
The antics of shop assistants in a struggling department store; you've probably heard the catchphrases from Mr Humphries "I'm free!" and Mrs Slocombe "Has anyone seen my *****?".

Goodnight Sweetheart
It's about a man who finds a road that leads into wartime London, and he starts leading two lives. Not as funny as the other shows I mentioned, but quite an interesting premise and it doesn't fall into "paradox storylines" or "sci-fi" too much.

I had a 'Not the nine o'clock news' book a few years ago, boy it was hilarious.

On the cover, it had a picture of a Middle-Eastern looking guy, with the words "Is the shah really dead? see page 32", and on page 32, right at the bottom in very small type it said "Cover Story; Yes".

I love dry humour.
