I run a ubuntu 10.04 LTS system using the linux-headers-generic-lts-backport-oneiric to install and use 3.0.0 kernels.
After the last update it installs the 3.0.0.26 kernel but the headers stay uninstallable. I now found they are removed.

Which way should I continue?
I need the header files for compiling.
I don't want to upgrade to 12.04.1.LTS for Unity.

Do I have to roll back to 2.6.32 or .38 ?
Or is there any other way to proceed?

I'm thankful for any help.
Greetings,

ubuntu 12.04 can install gnome3, it is very beautiful and better than unity.

Or you can try add repo in cd rom of 10.04.

I chose 10.04 LTS for the reason of 5 years support, therefore the way to 12.04 is not the way I want to go if at all possible.

10.04 desktop version will reach its end-of-life in April 2013. Five year support begins with 12.04 Ubuntu desktop version.

If you don't like Unity, there are other desktop environments e.g. KDE, Xfce or LXDE. Lubuntu (LXDE) 12.04 is not an LTS release though. Xubuntu (Xfce) 12.04 desktop is supported until April 2015; Kubuntu 12.04 desktop is supported for five years.

That's the reason I chose the server version; but also here no headers.
