Suddenly I have to log in twice before it takes effect and the system starts. After the first try, it acts as though I entered the wrong password, The second try always works.

I'm using Gnome from the software center, if that makes any difference.

How can I fix this?

Thanks!

Earlier today the system had a hard crash (reset button type). Upon recovery, the problem had fixed itself, hopefully for good.

I had a similar problem with openSUSE 12.1 KDE on a MacBook. It would always reject the first attempt to enter the password. I finally found that the problem was that during the first attempt to enter the password, the system always lost one or two characters from the password. When I started to type the password slower and verified that every keyboard stroke resulted in a bullet in the password dialogue box, the password would have been correct, even on the first attempt.

It wasn't losing characters. I checked carefully that the number of dots exactly matched the password count.

And this problem repeated many times.
