I have seen similar threads, but none to this point have provided the right clue.

The GUI installer on 12.04 live disk does not 'see' the HDD. If I mount a usb HDD or thumbdrive, it 'sees' only that, but I'm not interested in installing on removable media.

The crowning oddity is that 12.04-server text installer 'saw' the drive! I left the computer for a few hours before installing, and upon returning, I couldn't repeat the success.

For simplicity, I haven't interest in dual-booting the resident Windows 7, but I need some sort of clue how to proceed. Is there any report I can generate to illustrate the situation? I've got to repeat, the live disk does no installation whatsoever, as no partitions are discovered to mount.

Maybe you can try with alternate CD witch you can find here. (http://releases.ubuntu.com/precise/) Of course you will pick up architecture you want for your iso image.
