Hi
I'm building a file server for home and need some help with Ubuntu functionality, if anyone can help.
First, some background info. I had a PC running Windows XP. It had 3 shares to store my data. It was configured to:
1. Go into standby after a certain amount of time of inactivity (15 mins).
2. Go into standby when the power button is pressed.
3. Come out of standby when one of the shares is accessed (or via a ping)

As XP support is ending, I am trying to build an alternative. I have built a Ubuntu PC and am trying to replicate this functionality, with limited success.
1. I have successfully setup the PC to enter standby after 15 minutes, but only when I'm logged in as the user.
2. I have managed to configure the PC to go into standby when the power button is pressed, but only when logged in as the user. This means that when the PC comes out of standby I can't send it back into standby unless I log is first.
3. I can't get the PC to come out of standby by pinging it from another PC.

As I don't interact with this PC much (I just switch it on and let it standby/resume as required) I don't want to have to constantly logon as the user to get this to work as I want.

Can anyone help me with the above? I'm really struggling as I don't want to revert back to Windows XP (end of support) and Windows 7 is overkill (plus associated baggage required such as anti virus, etc)

Any help would be greatly appreciated

Many thanks in advance

Having a headless server, and needing it always up, not much i can offer, but some time ago, i played with xbmc.

just maybe that'll lead you in the rite direction.

Thanks very much for the information, but it's not quite what I need at the moment.

If I could only sort out these issues I would be fine, otherwise it looks like I'm heading for Windows 7 land :(

do what you must, it isn't sinful going that route, but it's much better to research more on a free and open source way. if you see what i posted and use that for a starter, it may in fact get you somewhere.

for example: http://www.google.com/search?q=wake+linus+ser+via+network&sugexp=chrome,mod=12&sourceid=chrome&ie=UTF-8

a little work won't hurt for something rock solid.
