Ubuntu 12.04 update Manager Failing to update..

Guys i'm new to linux n have been using 12.04 for last two months without any problems...but suddenly its not updating..whenever i try to open update manager it gives this error...


Could not initialize the package information

An unresolvable problem occurred while initializing the package information.

Please report this bug against the 'update-manager' package and include the following error message:

'E:Encountered a section with no Package: header, E:Problem with MergeList /var/lib/apt/lists/archive.canonical.com_ubuntu_dists_precise_partner _binary-i386_Packages, E:The package lists or status file could not be parsed or opened.' error...

Even in terminal i tried to update but the same thing....i even tried to install synaptic but got this error instead..

sudo rm /var/lib/apt/lists/archive.canonical.com_ubuntu_dists_precise_partner _binary-i386_Packages
sudo apt-get update

You apparently just have a bad package list. This will remove the old one and download a new one.
