I did an inplace upgrade of a working 10.04 LTS to 12.04 LTS.

On first reboot I received the message-

udevd[294]: error: runtime directory '/run/udev' not writable, for now falling back to '/dev/.udev'

and boot goes not further.

The message is unintelligable to me, so my questions are:

1. Is this solvable?
2. Is this recoverable?
3. Do I have to reinstall 10.04 LTS from scratch and wait another couple of years for the kids of the St. Trinian's Junior School Computer Club to get 12.04 LTS right?

Oh, and I get exactly the same message when I try booting in recovery mode so it seems to me the installation is inaccessible.
