My Ubuntu 12.04-32bits often (but not always) fails to load the proper nouveau driver and then falls back to the vesa driver, giving a low resolution and no external screen. As said, if I am lucky it loads ok (1 out of 10 tries).

I have the 11.09-64bits version in dual-boot on the same laptop and this has no problem.

Any hints?

I am pretty sure now that the 'randomness' is related to the power-plug being plugged into the laptop. Without it it seems to ALWAYS boot correct. With the plug plugged it seems to NEVER boot correct.
