What are my options for live streaming from a webcam to a site? Something like uStream but without the ads and costly monthly fees is what I'm looking for. I'm open to all suggestions -hosting on a home server.

Think you misunderstood me. Streaming to site meaning. an actual website like example.com

Found multiple streaming sites but none that allowed you to embed on an outside site. I was looking at Ustream because of the chat functionality and embed but it comes with ads and I'd like to eventually place my own ads. Perhaps incorporating a seperate chat would be an option?

That still leaves me with video streaming hosting and the option to inaly into site.

Looking at utilizing Amazons EC2 + Cloudfront + S3 for hosting and data storage. That leaves me the option to host an open source html5 capable video server. Which one to pick.

camfrog would be what you are looking for.
You could probably use AirVideoServer or FFServer as well

I use DaCast - http://www.dacast.com/

They have a free service which offers (I believe) 20gb in bandwidth, and then paid service which starts at $19 per month for 100gb of bandwidth. You setup your stream, choose your encoder (Adobe Encoder and others are supported), and then you make the choice of whether to stream to a DaCast page OR you can embed the included code in various methods (i-frame included) into your page.
You can also choose to charge money for your live streams... they include that option for free. Pretty impressive service without ads.

Hope that helps.
