When upgrading a Dell Inspiron from 10.04 LTS to 12.04 LTS the wlan functionality was gone. Details are in the following thread.

I made this upgrade as a test run for a whole computer lab with 30+ Laptops and would appreciate if someone could explain to me what was going on since I can't edit the /etc/network/interfaces file of each single Laptop after the upgrade. I need a way to avoid this problem in the first place.
