how'd you move your window buttons on the panel without separators? can't for the life of me figure it out. and if i use a separator and hit expand it moves all the way to the right of the panel. would prefer to have my window buttons right in the center of the panel.

haha you want the symmetry! it is done by having an expanded separater on each side of the window buttons.

Thanks!

When I search for a new wall, I just type in what I'm looking for... not the res... and I use Google Images.

In the wall above, I searched for "fairy fantasy wallpaper".

My display is an odd size (non-widescreen), so I usually have to tweak whatever I find with GiMP.

First screenshot of the month, and it's not of Ubuntu.

Full-size screenshots here:
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v245/viperdvman/Screenshots/ScreenshotBodhiNet1.jpg

I've installed Bodhi Linux on my netbook as its primary (and only) Linux OS alongside Windows 7. Some of its appearance is still preliminary: I'd like to tweak the GTK themes and probably mess with the Conky clock a little more, maybe play with other Conky settings as well. The wallpaper is a modified Zelda wallpaper that I put together (notice the ghost images of Zelda, Link, and Midna in the background) specifically for the netbook. 1024x600 sits right in between 16:9 and 16:10. What the screen doesn't show is my autohiding Engage dock on the right side, houses my taskbar and a lot of my netbook gadgets (volume, battery, cpufreq, wifi, etc.).

So far, I'm liking how Bodhi runs on the netbook, and have had no problems with it, yet. Besides, just like with my desktop Bodhi, I can customize this any way I want :D

Computer: Netbook
Distro: Bodhi Linux 2.0.1
Desktop Environment: E17 "Enlightenment"
Enlightenment Theme: A-Angelic-v3
GTK Theme: Greybird (default)
Wallpaper: custom "Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess" wallpaper
Icons: modified ACYL (pretty much identical to Duma's Bodhi icon theme)
Docks: dual Engage docks (left is launcher, right is autohiding with taskbar and gadgets)
Apps in Left Dock: PCManFM (file manager), Firefox, Google Chrome, Pidgin, Liferea (RSS reader), Audacious, VLC, LibreOffice. LibreOffice Writer, leafpad, Terminology, Synaptic Package Manager, and System Monitor
Apps in hidden Right Dock: Taskbar, Mixer gadget, cpufreq gadget, Battery gadget, Systray for WiFi
Conky: "Bodhi LUA Clock" with custom Hyrule Symbol

Nothing too special here. I'm using the Boomerang-Deux theme with a wallpaper I stole from someone who posted their desktop in August! I think its a photo of New Zealand? I also fiddled with some transparencies a little bit.

I'm going to roam around this forum for some good conky scripts. I haven't used conky in a while because I was using i3 on arch & gentoo until I broke everything :-) so back to Ubuntu, at least for a little while.

Now for my first Ubuntu screenshot of the month... as my first was a Bodhi one.

Full-size screenshots here:
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v245/viperdvman/Screenshots/ScreenshotUbuQuantal1.jpg

This is a LiveUSB (non-persistent) test run of Ubuntu 12.10 beta. As far as Ubuntu and its official derivatives go, I usually wait until the betas are out before I start testing. But, I haven't really noticed any real differences yet as I haven't played with previews in the dash yet. But, I've done what I always do when I test run any Debian or Ubuntu based distro... make sure all repos are active, and install all my usual apps... well, most of them. That, and I threw in a nice Ubuntu wallpaper, one that I googled and found. And as you see, other than not being able to use different wallpapers for different monitors, Unity runs on my dual displays perfectly :)

More testing to come, possibly.

(edit: I still have yet to test AWN in Quantal, which I should next time I test it. This is important, especially since AWN in Precise has issues with the task manager and simple launcher... the stupid pluses that are easy to fix in task manager but make simple launchers totally useless, and thus kill my ability to pull up the GNOME Activities/Unity Dash/KDE Takeoff and ROSA Launchers from AWN)

Computer: Desktop
Distro: Ubuntu 12.10 Beta
Desktop Environment: Unity
Window Theme: Ambiance (default)
GTK Theme: Ambiance (default)
Wallpaper: textured charcoal Ubuntu (from somewhere on Google)
Icons: Humanity (default)
Apps Unity Launcher: Home Folder; Firefox; Pidgin; Audacious; VLC; LibreOffice Writer; gedit; GNOME Dictionary; Ubuntu Software Center; Terminal; System Settings

Wauw, i must say you guys understand how to costumize.

This is one of the things i loved about ubuntu from day one, if you're dissatisfied with its looks; just change it.

I've recently (today) tried both Linux Mint (i think it was Cinnamon i tried) as well as XFCE which i haven't tried for a couple of years. And i must say that i still prefer unity over that. I've considered for a long time to try and make my Interface look like MAC again. But i've just grown to love unity so much that i do not feel like changing it at all. Still, its fun to see whats out there though :)

Its kind of simple, but i got sooo tired of the orange, and i kinda like this theme with the green and the metallic. its called Zukitwo primary colors. and then im using the malys uniblack icons. and the background is called ubuntu next i believe.

I actually had a look into Linux mint to find out what all the rumors were actually about, and to see if a new desktop environment was what i wanted, but im so happy with unity, so i decided just to change the looks.

theme: Zukitwo-primary-colors (http://www.noobslab.com/2012/07/install-zukitwo-primary-colors-theme-on.html)
icon theme: malys-uniblack (http://www.noobslab.com/2012/05/install-malys-blueblack-icons-on.html)

However, the transparency you see in the Xubuntu panel is artificial - I had to set the same wallpaper & fiddle with the two respective strech/fit/etc settings on guest & host to get them to match. Any transparency in the guest passes the guest's background through, not the host's.

hehe, I know how to install Kubuntu, but I dont like it when it gets all bloated up with the different softwares. I prefer clean installs of either mix to be fair, but thanks anyway :D

Similar to last month's , but there are subtle differences. Got rid of gnome-panel (once your computer is fast enough, switching with unity's panel is no longer an annoying thing but actually useful) and it may not be noticeable at first, but I actually customized unity launcher's theme. (Basically replaced two image files with completely transparent stuff). I really like the look of my launcher after that and after I customized my launcher icons a little...

Click for zoom.

vexorian that launcher is beautiful. I really hate, when color of the launcher changes, depending on the color of the wallpaper.

I use myUnity to set the color to something that is not the wallpaper's one. But it has the bad habit of reverting every once in a while. Which means I set the color again.

I thought I'd work on making an Ubuntu Unity-style desktop using Bodhi Linux's "Enlightenment" desktop environment. I could make a Unity-style desktop with KDE if I wanted to :D

As you see, it's not an exact replica of Unity, but it's pretty close. Since Enlightenment doesn't have a global menu, I put a taskbar in its place.

Computer: Desktop
Distro: Bodhi Linux 2.1.0
Desktop Environment: E17 "Enlightenment"
Enlightenment Theme: A-Mystery-Bodhi
GTK Theme: Zukitwo-Primary-Red
Wallpaper: custom "Cadillac Ciel collage"
Icons: Faenza
Docks: Enlightenment Shelf with iBar gadget (positioned snug with top panel)
Apps in Launcher: PCManFM (file manager), Firefox, Google Chrome, Liferea (RSS reader), Pidgin, Audacious, VLC, LibreOffice Writer, gedit, GNOME Dictionary, Terminology, Synaptic Package Manager, GNOME Disk Utility, GNOME System Monitor

I don't think there is anything native to XFCE but Docky and Awn are in the repo/software center. You will want to delete the bottom panel before installing the dock. The dock in my screen shot is not in the repo. It is easy enough to restore the bottom panel if you don't like the dock.

no. for that you would need a dock. you can however add either window list or window buttons to either panel which would give you access to minimized windows.

Recently decided to bite the bullet and upgrade from Ubuntu 10.04 to Unity..it didn't go so well (just really isn't my thing), so tried a few alternatives and ended up with Kubuntu 12.04. It has been finicky and there's still a problem or two, but I'm enjoying it muchly and it looks OK (if more like slightly prettier version of what I would have done on Gnome 2).

Wallpaper here (http://wallbase.cc/wallpaper/69099)

Windows decoration is chrome greyscale from KDE-look

KFaenza icons

Glacier colours

Cairo Dock made to imitate AWN..as the latter appears to be no longer developed =(

Not the most exciting, but easy to work with.

… ubuntu … but try doing a minimal install and you are stranded in the ocean without a life raft.
Ubuntu isn't really meant for that sort of thing (it's meant to be Linux for dummies — like me — who aren't into much fiddling). If you're creating a minimal install because of a low-spec computer, try Lubuntu (http://lubuntu.net/) or the even smaller Bodhi (http://www.bodhilinux.com/).
