View Full Version : [SOLVED] Installing Ubuntu on Harddrive

Hi! I have used Linux before, also had the pleasure of trying Ubuntu when it first came out. Then switched back to Dell. Now I am using my Macbook and I love everything about it. Anyways I am in the process of fixing up a Dell desktop from my parents. I was wondering if it is possible to wipe Xp off and use Ubuntu as main OS. I just want to make sure if its safe to do so. I have only tried Ubuntu once as dual boot.

If there is already a post on this, I apologize in advance. I would appreciate being direct linked to the appropriate forum. So I can follow up on it. Also I would appreciate step by step instructions on installing Ubuntu as my main OS.

during the install of Ubuntu or Xubuntu you should be given the option of installing over the existing WinXP partition or drive. If doing so, the Master boot record will be adjusted to boot Ubuntu and you may have to reformat the partition, since WinXP uses ntfs, whereas Ubuntu uses ext4 or minimally ext3.

Welcome to the forums.

What are system specs? If 512K or less of RAM then Lubuntu or Xubuntu may be better. You can download liveCD and test to make sure it works ok with your hardware without too much tweaking.

Install screens are all the same. It just is which option you select on installing. As doktorOblivion suggests you should have an option to just use entire drive. It will erase everything so if you have any data you want to save, do that first.

Okay great. So I just download them on my usb dongle and then just boot up my computer just as normally… and then go through the partitioning process. Good to know.

And this is Dell desktop from 2005 or 2006, so not to old. Its fairly new and functional. Parents just ordered new computer and said I could take their old one. So I want to remove Windows and go Linux full time. I want to be able to use the desktop to its full potential as storage and misc. stuff. Maybe run my own self hosting website off it as well.
