I just upgraded and have a series of icons, like windows shortcuts, on left left side but there is no general access type icon for things like terminal, calculator, etc. I also can not access any of my wireless settings yet it is working in the background....but not always. Where/ how to I get some proper menus?

If you upgraded from 10.04, the new Unity interface looks like this. i assume that is what you mean by "on the left side". It's a vertical bar on the left side of the screen.

The top button with the ubuntu logo, open the so-called Dashboard, when you can just start typing any program and it will find it for you.

The older gnome interface with Places, Applications, etc is gone.

You can also open the Dashboard by hitting the windows logo key on the keyboard (the super key).

You can attach the icons of favorite programs in the Unity bar, when the program is open and an icon for it appears in Unity, just select right-click and Lock to launcher or similar. That will make the icon stay there even after the program is closed, and you can open it again by simply clicking it.

To get menus back, sort of, in 12.04 try installing classic menu indicator.
