Once again Ubuntu 10.10 has came to my rescue. By now installing Ubuntu on a raid 0 setup should not be a tough task. But it still is.

The newer revisions of Ubuntu are lacking something that exists in 10.10 when it comes to RAID.

The only way I can ever install a 64 bit version of Ubuntu is to firstly install 10.10: it picks up my raid volume in a different way to 12.04 and secondly - but certainly not least - is that fact this 10.10 is the only version that allows me to install grub without issue. It installs it straight onto sda, which is where it should be. However, with 12.04 only sdb is an option, or trying to install it onto one of those horrible mappers.

I just wish they would make it so installing new revisions of Ubuntu onto RAID 0 would not be an issue; I now have to install all upgrades 11.04 > 11.10 to 12.04.

And as for using an Alternate version to set up my partitions? You can forget it: every single one of those ISOs I have downloaded/redownloaded have failed on the installing software section. I only once managed to do it by some miracle at my other location's PC.

So long as installing 10.10 first and upgrading does not make a total mess of packages I am not so bothered.

I had some trouble as well. Do you have a UEFI motherboard by any chance?

Yes I do. I am tempted to say this is all not really a problem, but it is a little annoying - not too bad. I just need to do the final upgrade and then that's that.

Can you link me on a thread or article which tells of the conflicts between Ubuntu / UEFI ?

I have links to a lot of UEFI installs, but I do not think I have seen one with RAID. Not sure if alternative installer has a UEFI boot and the desktop does not have RAID drivers by default. How you boot installer is how it will install with desktop installer. Not sure if UEFI can see a FAT32 partition inside a RAID?

With UEFI you have to have a first partition formatted FAT32 and set as ef00 in gdisk with gpt partitioning.
