12.04 Black screen with blinking cursor

Hello everyone,
UBUNTU 12.04 starts well with livecd but fails to start after complete installation, black screen with a blinking cursor. I tried holding shift key and edit grub options but holding shift did not do anything. I give up, any suggestions?
Dell P4 desktop
1 GB RAM
nvidia graphics card ( I also tried by removing this card and using on board intel card but was useless)
I have tried installation many times, with manually creating swap and mountpoint as well. Please help

As I understand it, hitting any key after the bios screen should bring up the boot options menu.
At this point choosing the "nomodeset" option should allow you to boot into the system; Then use hardware drivers utility to install graphics driver.

I'm having the same problem. no buttons do anything during the black screen. I would like to know if it worked for the OP.
