I have been using Ubuntu 10.04 on my Dell Dimension 3000 (circa 2001 with 1GB of RAM) as my main OS. Even though it was a bit sluggish and a live cycle due to end in a few months, I am looking for a distro with the following criteria:

Has Ubuntu repositories (they seem to have tons of software for download).
Is stable low resource and fast
Gnome 2 DE ( I like the fact that you can drag and drop items to the panel and is simple to use)
Is a final release version (not beta or alpha)

I saw Fuduntu but found out it is based on Fedora and does not have the Ubuntu repositories.

Any suggestions?

Take a look at Puppy Linux, would turn your machine into a screamer.. :D

I love Puppy Linux. I use 5.2.8. It is sooooo fast. The only thing that frustrates me is when I look for software like Sound Converter that works great in Ubuntu, is problematic to install in Puppy Linux. Other than issues like this, Puppy is a gem. One of the 6 wonders of the computer world. :)

Debian stable still uses Gnome 2.

It's what Ubuntu is based on so you have the same apt-get commands and the repositories are almost identical.

Downloads are here (http://cdimage.debian.org/debian-cd/6.0.5/i386/iso-cd/), you just need CD-1.

This is not quite what you're looking for because it is Ubuntu 12.04 w/gnome 3, but using Gnome classic (no effects) which uses the Metacity window manager:

http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1966370

I've found that to work acceptably well with as little as an 1100MHz CPU w/1GB of RAM.

For sure editing panels and getting used to the changed menus is a bit of a learning curve but once you figure it out it's pretty simple :D

And Precise (12.04) is a 5 year LTS so once you have it set up you can relax until April 2017.

Linux mint uses MATE, a fork of gnome 2, and a distro built off Ubuntu.

Not a support question.

Yeah, I would probably look at SoulOS and Linux Mint w/MATE desktop.

Mate is just a fork of Gnome 2. I believe you can install it over Ubuntu 12.04 but I'm not sure what the issues are.

Also Xubuntu with xfce 4.8 will allow you to drag launchers and such into the panel.

SolusOS is reportedly very good on this front and while based on Debian do keep in mind that Ubuntu is based on Debian so it will have very similar apps its repositories.

Not what you want to hear but maybe give xubuntu a shot? very similar to good old gnome2.
