A while back, I purchased an Android tablet (Asus Transformer tf101). I like the machine, but I do miss ubuntu when I'm using it. One of the things that holds me back on the tablet is this: I simply haven't found a good forum for android that looks like it might offer the kind of help that Ubuntu forums have.

Ultimately, I think I'd really like to try to root the tablet and install Ubuntu. I see several apps in the play store that promise to install Ubuntu, or something similar (the something similar part scares me a bit) on a rooted machine. However, I may need to learn a bit first so:
does anyone have any recommendations for a good, reliable android forum?

There are several... how good they are will of course be debatable.

I signed up to http://androidforums.com/ but I haven't had a technical issue yet, mostly small talk.

Try http://transformerforums.com there a lot of good tips specific to the transformer, although, the help itself isn't as good as here.

I've only used the first two a couple of times and registered on the 3rd one, but haven't made any question yet:

http://www.androidtablets.net/forum/ <-- This one's huge, with subsections for each type of tablet.
http://www.androidquestions.org/forum.php
http://www.slatedroid.com/

Regards.
