I know you only by your nicknames and nothing more
I want all of us to know each other better.

several months ago I finished my service in the army
and now I'm studing MCSE (just to get a work , I don't like MS)

Not a bad thread...I'm going to move it where it belongs, in the cafe. After that I'll respond.

Okay...

I'm married with three kids, a 36 year old writer, an American citizen (USA) living in Morocco doing research for a book on local culture and language as revealed through humor. I graduated from the University of Arizona in 1992 and have done a ton of different things since then. I enjoy computers, languages, cultures, traveling, and playing the guitar. I also play a little on the bass guitar and mandolin, but I'm nowhere near as good at either. I have built my own computers, and even my own guitar amplifier (all tube--it rocks!). I'm a geek at heart but am often in disguise as a relatively normal person.

I'll be 50years old on July 3rd. I have been married to the same person for the past 26 years. My wife and I have raised 5 outstanding people who make my life worth living everyday. I enjoy being a dad and husband first and last. I am self employeed, enjoy baseball, billiards and cycling as hobbies. I dropped out of the corporate culture because I hated using my instincts as a weapon against others for their money and for the benefit of egotistical, selfish, greedy so called educated people who see life as a war rather than co-operative existence (sorry about that little rant---I get carried away so easily sometimes). Anyway that's a little bit about me11:-k

Okay, my turn.

I was born in England (Southampton) but got moved to South Africa at a very early age. Finished school in '82 and then lived through some of the most violent times on earth. One of the high points of my life was being reprimanded because I gave water to a "man of colour" during one of the mass freedom marches in the late 80's. (Water for G*ds sake. How low can one get?). Frightened the life out of me that did, but it was worth it. :-)

Three jobs later I am still in Cape Town, working by some strange coincidence very close to where I got reprimanded all those years ago. Cape Town is a completely different place now - a friendlier place, and it is a joy to call it home.

I'm a 35 year old translator and English teacher living in Barcelona Spain. Got a lovely "linux using" wife, beautiful 6 year old daughter, and another baby due in December.
My winter freetime is always spent with my computers, summer is mainly spent down the beach. I play guitar, read a lot and am addicted to standup comedy.
I'm currently studying networking and security systems (OSI/LPI) with a view to working as a network admin in the future.

I am 23. I just celebrated my fourth wedding anniversary and the birth of my first child. I work in desktop support which is pretty low on the totem pole but it is my first job in the field. I am attending college at a private college here in Anchorage, Alaska. I hope to very soon start up a web mastering business to do on the side.

There's a strikingly similar thread in the same subform... but:

I'm a 15 year old kid from Texas. I live in the Houston area, and not attending school at the moment (Summer!). I'll be a Sophomore this coming school-year. I'm half white (German, I think), half Mexican. Been using ubuntu for about 6 months now, and it's definitely given me some bragging rights to the nerds at school. :)

I do have a myspace (http://myspace.com/haroldxcore), if you want to add/get to know me better. :)

I'm a 16 year old, born and raised in Bellingham, Washington, which hides in the northwestern corner of the US (in case anyone's not familiar with the US' geography... I'm sure as hell not). I'm into martial arts, computers, and science/fiction. I'm a volunteer at the American Museum of Radio and Electricity, where I either serve as office assistant or production assistant for the museum's radio station.

I'm 24, not from anywhere in particular (my dad was in the navy for a while; we moved a lot), but I live in Columbia, MO, USA now (that's pretty close to the center of the country, for those of you who've never been). I program stuff for a living (I'm currently in the process of starting my own software company), and for fun I do more programming along with a little bit of drawing and writing.

I've been playing with Ubuntu since Warty, and finally went Linux-only about a month ago.

I'm a 36 year old male of the Ubuntu species, living in south-central (Virginia that is :p ). I migrated here from Charotte, NC, and there from Tampa Bay, FL, and there from Chicago, IL....
I'm engaged to be married to a dynamite redhead, step-father to two boys (ages 13 & 11), and owner of 5 dogs (four Shih Tzu's, one mixed breed). For work I'm the systems administrator in the Project Management Office of an aftermarket auto parts retail company. My next car will be a Mini Cooper S (w/JCW kit) ragtop. =D>

I've been using Ubuntu for < 1 month but totally love it & am trying to resist the urge to install it on my work-issued laptop. Outside of work I spend time learning Ubuntu, listening to Oasis, reading, watching Formula One autoracing, playing w/the dogs, and enjoying the dwindling public approval ratings of the Republican gov't. (whoops, did I say that out loud?! )

July 4th, 2006, 07:47 AM
My name is Derek Djons, as is my nick. I like to use the same name everywhere since it makes it easier to find me / my projects using Google.

I was born and raised till the age of five in Russia. After that period my mother moved to The Netherlands and I ended up here. At the age of sixteen I got my first computer and got very interested in them. Before I got my first computer I already spend hours and hours (weeks in total) learning about Windows 98 / ME from books. It seemed logical for me that I wouldn't understand jack when I would get the machine, so the best thing I could do is start learning things about it.

In the same year I asked my mother (still having 56K dial-in modem) if she could buy me a Linux distribution. She even did! So began my Linux voyage. I've growed up SuSE Linux. I'm a very big fan of the OS but later (very much later) I discovered that Debian was also very interesting. Within no-time Ubuntu got out and I fell in love with it's pleasant way of working, good features and a wonderfull community.

At the moment I work at an Apple Centre earning money for my hobby (photographing, skateboarding and mixing the two with traveling). But I'm planning going back to study photography next year on a fulltime base. Before the Apple Centre I worked at various Computer shops making, repairing, maintaining, selling & even got promoted to assistent-manager. But they didn't payed me enough for all my hard work. So I swited to Apple.

I'm single, 22 years old, also being hardcore busy with my hobbies.

I was born, and still live in Massachusetts (town withheld to maintain an air of mystery.) I am currently 16, although I have plans to upgrade eventually.
In the fall I will be a junior at the Waldorf High School of Mass. Bay, a school who's total enrollment has never exceeded 60 students. I am working to one by one convert the ~10 student computers to Linux (I'm at 2 now.)
When asked for a brief summary, I usually describe myself as an "arthritic computer geek." I am, by the standards of everyone I know, an enormous computer geek, however I have read these and other forums, and I know better.
I am an avid woodworker/woodturner. I make virtually no money selling handmade pens. I am working on an online store so that I can decrease my profits even more.
I have been using Linux for a little over a year; Ubuntu for ~9 months.
My other interests include baseball (Red Sox), playing trombone, downloading and trading live music (mainly They Might Be Giants), listening to the product of the previous interest, reading more documentation and tutorials than could possibly be healthy, all thing Joss Whedon (though not wonder woman, I guess I'm not including future works), and not remembering anything else that I like because I am very tired right now.
Did I miss anything? If you know of something, I'm flattered, but please stop stalking me.

Augie

P.S.
I tend to **** off teachers with my highly sarcastic and often pretentious writing style (I tend to talk like this too.)

I'm 26, was born and live in England, UK. My mothers side of the family is German and my fathers is English. I am currently out of work looking for a new job hopefully as an IT technician, previously I was a Support Supervisor for a telecoms company. I live with my partner of almost 3 years (we are engaged) and her 2 children in a smallish rural village.

I've been using Ubuntu for 9 months and recently converted my other half :)

I'm 33, Married to Julie, 36, and live in Galway on the west coast of Ireland.

I have 3 children; Christopher, 8; Samantha, 7; and Caitlin, 2. However, none of them live with me, as they are products of two previous relationships, and live with their mums in England, where I am from originally.

I emigrated to Ireland 2 years ago, after getting fed up with the UK. I work as a Van Driver for Pat The Baker (http://www.patthebaker.com), Delivering bread.

I am a linux geek otherwise, having used it since 1996, but I cannot stand office environments, and don't like working too closely with other people, so I stay in driving as a job.

I Built my own 64 bit PC, using parts from Komplett (http://www.komplett.ie), and it runs Zenwalk Linux as a sole OS. My current project is porting the Xlack script to Weechat, which I think is the coolest IRC client I have ever come across.

I listen to mainly new age and Irish Folk music, but like Pink Floyd as well, my fave song being "Wish you were here", and I have a good bit of Electronica-trance type music, which is good for hacking to. I read Terry Pratchett when I am not at the computer, and my favourite film is "Swordfish". I would LOVE to get my hands on a tool which did a 3D simulation when you ran make on a large prog.

About me: Well, I'm a 23 year old software engineer for a rather large company. I currently live with my girlfriend of 4 years in Seattle, WA. We're having a house built currently and will be moving out of the city within a few months here. I graduated from a local university a few years back with degrees in Computer Science and Humanities. An odd combination, I know.

As for linux experience, I started playing around with it in college, and even used it as my primary OS for probably a year or so. Recently I decided that learning linux could possibly benefit me if I am ever in a position of looking for a new job, and I'd like to get involved in some open source development, so I installed Ubuntu on a spare hard drive on my machine. However, after using it for the last week or so, I've realized that there's basically nothing that I do on Windows that I can't do here (with the possible exception of Civ IV), so I haven't booted into windows for a few days now.

First of all, I would like to say that this thread is totally hippie, totally gay and totally "Lonely Hearts" and you should all be ashamed of it

Anyway, I'm 23, happily married to a Toshiba Satellite and I live in Absurdistan (generally known as Bulgaria). I should have graduated with a degree in Business Administration by now but I flunked Calculus (both 1 and 2) so I have a couple of more courses to take. Currently I am eating burgers on my parent's couch and perfecting my Ubuntu. Full-time. In a couple of days I expect to leave for the seaside where I'll work as an assistant manager of a small hotel. The work is very heavy and requires the processing of inhumane quantities of beer, pinacolada and... well it's still illegal so nevermind ;)
Until recently I was a very unsatisfied Microsoft customer and pirate but fortunately I came across Ubuntu and the sun is shining again on my system. (Metaphorically speaking. I haven't seen the sun in 2 years.) The only reason for keeping XP is GTA San Andreas. I am waiting for a technology to be invented which will be able to rip my brain and insert it into the game.

Im a 25 year old guy from FInland. I live in the capital, Helsinki, where I study forestry, mire ecology to be more exact ;) I love the nature and all those living beings that exist with us here on this planet. I ride bikes (thats bicycles, the pedalling kind :) ) a lot, own several of them, and try to go everywhere by bike since all those cars are killing us people and all the other beings too..Its enough I have several Linux boxes sucking all that electric juice

I also am into all kinds of music, but mostly my heart beats to all kinds electronic, from techno to ambient, and all underground raving kind people (peace, love, unity, respect!).

Also I read a lot, politícal and not so. Its not a conspiracy, the powerful and wealthy people really do NOT care about our lives and are out to take all our freedoms.. (one of the sites I habit a lot .. http://rigint.blogspot.com/ aka http://rigorousintuition.blogspot.com/ )

If id have to define my worldview shortly, I would say im an animist and an anarchist, thru and thru. In my view people must not bow down to authority unquestioningly, that has been the way for far too long, and look where its taken us. We need to become more conscious of our own minds and its workings and realize that each individual has all the potential of any genious ever lived. Trust in yourself, not some President or King. The universe of our minds is vast. We are free to think and create as we will. We are not slaves and we are not evil unless we will to be so.

I was born in a depressing town in Missouri, in the US. I've been expelled from seminary, a US Marine, attacked by a sea gull, earned a variety of boring MS certifications, been playing with Linux since Redhat 5'ish, and am currently a sales manager in a software company. I'm married to a wonderful woman from the Philippines named Claire. My first computer was one I built from parts and plans in the back of magazine during the presidency of Jimmy Carter.

Born and raised in Wales, England for most of my life. Only recently moved to England (bout 6 years ago). Thinking about joining the R.A.F (Royal Air Force) either as a pilot, photographer or a "Communication and Information Systems Specialist". I'm refered to as "The Stick" most of the time because of my body build. Gotta love having a high metabolism. As all teenagers I'm in a band called "Necrocide", forced into the postion of singer (link can be found in my profile.).
Side note: No, we didn't know there was already a band called Necrocide, Give us a break would ya? =P

Been using linux on and off since Hoary. I think i have O.S.A.D (Operating System Attention Disorder).

If you wanna know more, Just ask, I'm always open to conversation.

I'm Donald, was born in Edinburgh in Scotland, lived there for 6 years then spent the rest of my life, until uni claimed it, running wild in the Borders/failing to learn anything in school. I was born and raised through the Steiner philosophy, was taught to learn by doing and through 18 odd years of this I have a very twisted view of anthropology.
I guess that this was what led me to Linux as the more I use it the more I can draw parallels between the FOSS community and the Steiner community.
At present I am just finishing the first year of a degree in Mechanical Engineering with Renewable Energy at Edinburgh University, and still destroying vast amounts of the countryside with some interesting experiments.
