LXDE is an extremely light DE that still functions like a modern UI. There are lighter DEs available, but they're really hard to use, unless you use computers back in the 90s.

Not sure what you want to compare here, since XFCE is a desktop environment while Fuduntu is a Linux distribution and not even based on Ubuntu but on Fedora. If you stay within the Ubuntu family, Lubuntu with LXDE is the lightest.

When you compare on a distribution basis, Debian or Arch with XFCE are still lighter than, for example, Lubuntu with LXDE. I've setup Debian and Arch with XFCE (32 bit) and such a setup will use around 80 MB of RAM on an empty desktop.

The two fastest for on my computer have been E17 and LXDE in that order . If I were to use E17 again I would use the Ubuntu based Bodhi Linux. http://www.bodhilinux.com/
