Today when I noticed the point release was available, I upgraded to Ubuntu 12.04.1 and I have to say it went pretty smoothly. Once the shock of a vastly different environment (from 10.04) wore off I began looking for familiar things. But I still cannot locate a screensaver for the desktop! Am I missing something or is it just no longer available?

Unfortunately, that is the case. The gnome devs decided that it wasn't useful anymore, for some reason, and they replaced it with a blank screen. So the screensaver now is just an empty (black) screen.

But you can still install and use xscreensaver. There are a couple of threads on this forum that explain how to install and integrate it in 12.04.

I found this really annoying, as I have a PC which is used as a Digital picture frame when it is not in use for other purposes, so the screensaver slideshow option was perfect.
Gnome seem to have really lost the plot recently.
Xscreensaver is OK though.
