View Full Version : USB 3.0 plug going into USB 2.0 socket... flaky!

Hi people.

I have just bought a Transcend JetFlash 700 USB 3.0 flash drive, and I have an annoying issue - when I plug the drive fully into the USB 2.0 socket (note: I do not force it in) it is hit and miss as to whether or not the PC recognises insertion and mounting of the drive. However, if I ease the drive out 2-3mm, the connection immediately makes, and is rock solid, whereas if I had wiggled the flash drive when it was pushed FULLY into the USB 2.0 socket, it would have an intermittent connection.

Having cleaned ALL my USB 2.0 ports on two PCs, and having cleaned the plug of the BRAND NEW flash drive, I can only think that the legacy USB 2.0/1.1/1.0 contacts inside the USB 3.0 plug are way too short, as, when I compare the wear marks on the gold contacts on ANY OTHER USB device, the wear seems to travel FAR further down the contacts inside the USB 2.x/1.x plug, and the USB 3.0 plug's legacy USB 2.x/1.x contacts within it, seem FAR FAR shorter.

### In a nutshell, the spring-loaded contacts within the USB 2.x/1.x socket, seem to travel too far down the legacy USB 2.x/1.x contacts inside the USB 3.0 *PLUG*, either going too far and off the end of them, breaking the circuit, OR too far off the end of them, and hitting one/all of the five USB 3.0 contacts... ###

Has anyone else had issues putting a USB 3.0 plug into a USB 2.x/1.x PC or motherboard?

Here are the new style contacts - pretty annoyed with this.

Thread moved to The Community Cafe.

Not an Ubuntu related support request (also please don't bump more than once every 24 hours)
