weird freezes

i am on ubuntu 12.04 and am experiencing weird freezes for a couple of seconds or so while switching between windows and also while (specially when)going in fullscreen mode in vlc. also i am not getting any sound from the jacks in front panel while the one on the back panel is working fine.can somebody help me out??
my mobo is ga-z77m-d3h if it is relevant somehow.
