I tried installing the multi-media disk and it worked first time, then later the upgrade stopped working. I lost my audio studio.
I had a backup Ubuntu 10.04 and it still boots (using it now).
But later I went back and made Ubuntu 12.04 live cd and tried installing that,
several times.
Looks good from CD, installs, but won't boot past splash screen,
and keyboard stops working after the grub loader (pink scrn).

I tried repair-mode, trying sudo apt-get update,
I got messages of "unable to write file" or some such, as if the Harddisk was read-only.
This is beyond my programming skills.
Why are Dell keyboards incompatible, and why won't Ubuntu 11 or 12 install?

How can I fix this, without hours of programming, rebooting, guesswork, and horror?
Everytime I install a new version, it eats up more harddrive space, but won't run.
I'm afraid to delete anything, because I also have gigabites of data files on the harddrive.

Running out of space for experiments, and frustrated.

I have a DELL optiplex 330 desktop, which is pretty good, has 4gig ram and good audio card (althoug its incompatible with Ubuntu Studio for some reason.)
I was resigned to giving up on the audio studio, but at least getting the new Ubuntu OS working.

Why is this so difficult?
