After reading a thread here about Mplayer I checked out the homepage

ANd was saddened by the news, yes it was well documented before about all the software patents but it only really hit home today.

Will other apps follow the same suit ?
Is multi-media on linux hitting a drawback ?
I hope not as Linux is the way forward I believe.

I dont think we are having drawbacks of any kind. Remember linux is held and maintained by the community. If stuff gets phishy, Others will rise; others with no websites, etc. Just like bittorrent and irc and whatever p2p has stayed for good.
