I"m a relatively new Linux user, started with Ubuntu 11.04. Due to video driver problems I had to roll back from 11.10 to 11.04 last year. My system has been stable and running great since then.
My question is whether I can now update directly from 11.04 to 12.04? If not, what are my options.

Nope. For upgrading from 11.04 ot12.04 you'll have to go through 11.10.
Otherwise do a fresh and clean install by downloading 12.04LTS from the Ubuntu site.

If you wait until August 23 you can download the next point release 12.04.1 of Ubuntu 12.04. That is a release that contains all updates so far, which means that you'll have to download and install a considerable amount of updates less after installing.
