Would this be an easy way to launch applications without a panel, using only the desktop?

I've linked the applications into standard sections, like Accessories, Games etc. I've clicked on the Accessories and then on Calculator, just as you do with a panel - Awn, Cairo, Gnome or Unity.

We have Nautilus, so we can have any application or a file open in any of our virtual desktops, can't we?

What do you think?

Regards!

Ariya

Not for me as I can have a search and launch tool integrated in the desktop like this.

It looks like you've put a whole bunch of links in a folder, is that right?

Personally I use a smart launcher, Synapse. It's much quicker than the Unity dash, and plugs into Zeitgeist so you still get all the clever bits. I used to use Gnome Do, which is basically the same thing.

Yes.
I found Synapse fast, after reading your post. Thanks! :D
Do you keep it on always? If so, how to do that?

How do you add other apps to it?

Its standard in KDE but not enabled by default on the desktop work space. However the netbook workspace has that by default (but different panels)

You can't at the moment but s.fox says he plans to add that in the future.

At the moment the application has no customisation, that is a feature that I intend to add at a later point :)

Once you do that, I can see myself using your simple launcher a lot in openbox, assuming you keep it lightweight.

I don't use Twitter and Gmail is automatically on when I start Firefox. I am not a python knowledgeable person, but I know, if something is changed, it might come through. What if I change twitter to calculator in the .ui and/or .xml files in /usr/share/myshortcuts and add a calc.png to both Media and UI folders? Would it work?

Regards!:)

I don't have the source with me right now, but I am reasonibly sure you would need to edit the python script too.

One of the changes I would like to do is introduce a settings file which would load the following info dynamically:

Path to icon
Command to execute
Hover text

Having a settings file would also allow for customisation that you speak of :)

Yours is a very nice app. It is simple and elegant and gets the work done. It could turn into series of boxes, like Accessories, Games etc, if you'd work on that, or you'd like to do that. Then all that's needed would be few icons, which connect to those boxes and they could be either on the desktop or on the panel. Nice to have them on an autohiding panel.

Good luck!:)

I have it bound to a hotkey. When I want to launch something I just tap the key and it pops up pronto. There's tons of plugins to make it do all sorts of stuff too.

Name some of the plugins, please.
