Ubuntu 12.04 Gnome Classic: all icons in notification area have white background

Spent hours on the internets trying to find a solution. Found an old bug https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/checkgmail/+bug/403135 but can't find a solution.

Any thoughts are welcome.

A number of people have reported this problem in 12.04 and there are other threads but I don't know if the problem was solved. Also, When transparency is set from panel properties it only works in areas without indicators.
