One laptop per child

I am very happy that one laptop per child (http://www.laptop.org) initiative is close to reality now. Admittedly I was a bit skeptic when I first heared about it but the project has come up really nice. Production is expected to start ealy next year with government in many developing countries extending their full support for it.

Another good thing if the project become successful then it would boost desktop linux market share tremendously. Right now these laptops are planned to be based on fedora core. I wish they were using a debian based distro if not Ubuntu particularly.

On March 15, 2006, after having introduced the Ultra Mobile PC, Bill Gates mocked the project, saying “If you are going to go have people share the computer, get a broadband connection and have somebody there who can help support the user, geez, get a decent computer where you can actually read the text and you're not sitting there cranking the thing while you're trying to type.”
