Unpack the .tar.gz-file, and you've got an executable installer to run.

Ignore all of the instructions above for installing XAMP, and also there is rarely any need for downloading files from websites like you have done with Apache.
You should just install the default LAMP stack using the standard Ubuntu installation method. Just open a terminal and type:

sudo apt-get install lamp-server^This will install Apache, MySQL and PHP for you from the standard Ubuntu repositories.

You must cd to your Desktop. Should work with cd ~/Desktop or just cd Desktop, then run the command again.

If you're new to Ubuntu, I really suggest you find the time to read this eBook (https://launchpad.net/ubuntu-manual/precise/precise-release/+download/Getting%20Started%20with%20Ubuntu%2012.04.pdf) from cover to cover. It will fill you in on the details you need to know how Ubuntu works. Especially if you're used to a Windows environment.

sorry for the late reply, look it's not good to have both installed as it may conflict if both apache servers are running, I recommend you choose what you really want and remove the other! xampp is easier to configure but is used mainly for local testing, or if you want the real thing then it's the lampp server from software center!
when following instructions ensure they are the correct ones for xampp or ubuntu lampp.
this one should get you running xampp
