View Full Version : Mame/mess question

I recently decided to try out mame on ubuntu through the QMC2 frontend.

It seems the current version is having problems with installing sdlmess because it requires a newer version and I have had no luck with compiling that (there seems to be no newer sdl-mess deb around than the one found in the repos)

sdl-mame works great though.

Now my n00b'ish questions:

1) What is the difference between sdl-mame and sdl-mess?
2) Which one is better / more advanced?
3) Do I need both?
4) How can I get mess working with the latest qmc2 on ubuntu 12.04?

thanks :)

Hello.

Mame is for the old arcade games (pacman, Donkey kong etc, there are thousands of them).
Mess is for emulating old (game)computers like colecovision, bbc micro, Sinclair ZX Spectrum and lots of others.
Neither is more advanced, they just have different functions.
The newest Mame can be found in the repositories.
For Mess you have to add the repository from this page: http://sdlmame.wallyweek.org/

Have fun
