You can't fool me by taking a picture of the engine bay of you '58 Dodge.

Back then, they made stuff that lasts! Efficiency generally sucked, but they lasted!

i think that was about 15-20 prior to the manf. date
they now make PSUs with a 7 year warranty, my new one has a 5 year

Replace the caps with new quality ones and it will probably last another 7 yrs. Caps are cheap ;)

Aye, we've got some very old machines ticking over, with power supplies that look like they were designed for diesel subs; always afraid to disturb them. 5yr is a pretty good warranty.

Good PSUs are over-designed and fairly robust.

I usually buy a PSU with a wattage rating about 1/3 again as much as the peak wattage I expect to demand of it. If you run them with a peak load of no more than about 75% of their rating, they stay cool and can last virtually indefinitely.

you probably consider my new one over designed, it has a clear shroud in it to direct the airflow
i wanted to keep it modular, and i found a good quality PSU on sale for $51
i had been considering replacing that hand-me down cause it was noisy

For PSUs, over-design is a good thing.
